    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is situational awareness?

Situational Awareness means being alert to the weak human, technical, or cultural signals that hint at a developing situation. Those with the experience to recognize potentially dangerous patterns of behaviour and conditions exhibit high situational awareness. These people have a capacity to quickly observe, orientate and predict an outcome, and respond in a way that minimizes risk.

What happens in the absence of situational awareness?

Routine tasks often lull us into complacency. We are unaware of the signs of danger around us. In this state, something unexpected will surprise us, and our ability to make sound decisions under pressure is severely compromised. We react without thinking. OntheJob exercises continually remind learners of this vulnerability to reverse complacency.

How does OntheJob develop situational awareness?

Our story-based exercises allow people to improve their reactions to unexpected situations that are relevant to their work. We put learners in another person’s shoes, allowing them to discover their vulnerabilities as they are forced to face the contradictions of their biases and beliefs. This is an extremely powerful behavioural change mechanism.

What makes OntheJob different from other training?

We do not replace foundational knowledge training that teaches people how to do something properly. We teach them how to deal with unique and unexpected problems that inevitably arise, to measure and elevate situational awareness.

What learner data is generated from scenario play?

We measure and provide data analytics on competency-specific Situational Awareness and Alignment with Expectations. We also provide detailed data on awareness, procedural, cultural and competency gaps relative to specific tasks and circumstances, which reveals the percentage of the workforce that is at risk.

What industries is OntheJob designed for?

Any industrial setting where people and property is put in harm’s way or where individuals face high-consequence decision-making under pressure.

Can scenarios be converted to other languages?

Any language can be accommodated and scenarios can be presented in text, audio and video formats.

What systems requirements are needed to play OntheJob scenarios?

Our gamified situational awareness training is designed to be played on mobile devices, but any device will do. Our classroom version is specifically designed to maximize group discussion and revelation.

What inspired the creation of OntheJob?

OntheJob’s founder, Peter Gammell, caused a serious incident while on the job. For Peter, this was a call to action to find a way of ensuring nobody else has to go through the same thing. OntheJob is the result of that dedication.

What does the OntheJob Brand Symbolize?

The nautilus is one of nature’s purest examples of the Fibonacci Sequence, which, in our case, establishes that human advancement is the sum of the experiences that precede it.

The mirrored city scape is representative of how other people’s experiences are relatable, and by mirroring them back to us, we gain great personal insight. The city scape is a common theme for all sources of workforce development.

The lights featured in the centre of the nautilus represents the start of a story.
