About OntheJob
OntheJob Believes that Curiosity and Shared Experiences Are the Keys to Powerful Organizational Learning!
People don’t change without first having experiences that contradict their biases.
What We Believe
A person’s actions are often a reflection of the examples set by influencers around them. Unfortunately, influencers don’t typically see how their actions may undermine everyone’s interests. Experience Transfer puts us in another’s shoes, giving us direct line-of-sight to the unintended consequences of our own behavior. We “experience” the flaws in our thinking.
Bias statements represent beliefs that have unintended and damaging consequences for a workforce. Some of these may sound familiar.
- “Following procedure “by the book” can lead to downtime. I don’t like being the person that causes downtime”
- “I’ve been doing this a long time. I take risks I’m comfortable with”
- “I follow the example of people around me who’ve been here a lot longer”
- “The routine things I do are easy. I don’t really need to think about them”
These biases undermine our attempts to shift a culture of misalignment that may exist at every level of an organization. When misaligned biases exist, it’s not enough to tell people to think differently. To consider a new way of thinking, they must first have relatable experiences that contradict their biases.
Our work involves capturing and delivering contextually relevant experiences from your operation that connect negative outcomes to flawed biases. Learners navigate real experiences from the perspective of the frontline worker, supervisory staff or management. As a result, they discover how their thinking reinforces a culture that serves nobody’s interests. By replacing flawed biases, we develop situational awareness and change behavior.
“Converting real incidents into short training exercises is a good way for everyone to learn from other people’s mistakes.” — 100% of users surveyed want to learn from peers.
OntheJob’s Learning Philosophy:
The revered Indian philosopher and educator, Sri Aurobindo, said, “For learning to occur you must first be curious.” Training providers try hard to generate content that miraculously converts learner indifference to genuine curiosity. Unfortunately, the best they can hope for is content that is less boring. OntheJob has a better way. Gamified stories of real people’s most challenging moments serve to trigger our inherent curiosity about what makes other people tick. Our survival instincts are hardwired to adapt our behavior based on our evaluation of other people’s mistakes. In fact, our ability to hear another person’s story and imagine ourselves in their shoes is why our cerebral cortex is credited with human advancement.Sri Aurbindo - Philosopher
When we hear a story, we subconsciously ask ourselves, “What was he/she thinking?” and “What would I do?”. We try to understand our own vulnerabilities in order to adapt and to measure up.
Two notable scientists, Jean Paigent and Thomas Kuhn, determined that when we encounter new information that contradicts our pre-existing views, we assimilate the information; we force it to fit into our existing views and dismiss it as inconsequential. But if we repeatedly face experiences that contradict our old views, we will accommodate new perspectives; we will form an enduring connection to this new information. This happens naturally throughout our life as we overcome challenges.
